Discussion Highlights: Wearing the White Coat and the Star of David: Embracing Your Jewish Identity in the Workplace Amid Antisemitism August 28, 2025
● How is antisemitism expressed
in healthcare settings (subtle bias, stereotypes, explicit discrimination)?
● How does antisemitism
manifest differently when directed at providers (e.g., colleagues, patients,
administrators)?
● Personal resilience: What
does it mean to “wear the white coat and the Star of David” proudly?
● Institutional advocacy:
Encouraging hospitals and schools to address antisemitism explicitly.
● Cultural change: Fostering an
environment of respect, dignity and inclusivity.
● Support each other, embrace
your Jewish identity confidently, advocate for policy that meaningfully reduces
antisemitism
● Takeaway Message: The key to
embracing your Jewish identity - or building confidence and efficacy in
carrying out any decision that you choose to make - is through practicing in
lower stakes environments so as to build your skill and your comfort to be able
to act in higher stakes environments. Those skills are cognitive, affective and
behavioral.

Work-Life Balance: This discussion focused on
balancing the demands of medicine with life’s greater responsibilities. Unlike
the catchphrase “work-life balance,” the reality in healthcare is far more
complex. Judaism and Torah values emphasize rest, peace, harmony, and the
sacred importance of self-care. Medical professionals bear the profound duty to
comfort, heal, and guide patients during moments of greatest vulnerability.
This noble calling, however, often brings emotional and physical strain, threatening
personal relationships and inner peace.
Rabbi Lerman drew from the Baal Shem Tov and
sources alike to remind us: our essence is not the physical body, but the soul
revealed through love, care, and connection. Through stories and metaphors, he
illustrated that human beings are more than logic and flesh. We are divine
souls with a higher purpose: to bring light, love, and harmony into the world.

Together, these events remind us why this network
exists: to connect, to learn, and to bring wisdom into the most pressing
challenges of our time.
